Charlotte, NC: Queen City, Carolina Heart

Charlotte, NC: Queen City, Carolina Heart

Charlotte, North Carolina knows how to keep moving. Look up and you'll see a skyline that keeps changing; look a little closer and you'll find tree-lined streets, longtime neighborhood favorites, and people who make a big city feel personal. The Queen City has ambition, but its Carolina heart is what makes it home.

Incorporated in 1768, Charlotte was named for Queen Charlotte, wife of Britain's King George III, which is where its royal nickname comes from. Nearby, the discovery of gold on the Reed farm in 1799 helped launch America's first gold rush, and Charlotte later became home to a branch of the United States Mint in 1837.

That history adds another layer to a city often known for banking and business. Its first branch-mint building now houses the Mint Museum Randolph, connecting an early chapter of Charlotte's economy with the art and culture that help shape it today. There's more beneath those glass towers than you might expect.

Ask someone what they love about Charlotte, though, and they'll probably tell you about their neighborhood. NoDa has its music and creative spirit, Plaza Midwood its independent shops and familiar gathering places, and South End its busy stretch along the Rail Trail. Uptown brings the stadiums, museums, and game-day crowds, but the streets around it give the city its texture.

Charlotte's story has some remarkable hometown voices, too. Jazz pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams was born here in 1910, long before the skyline looked anything like it does today. It's a reminder that a city's influence isn't measured only in the height of its buildings.
